Tuak is a small-batch, living drink, so storing it well keeps it tasting the way the maker intended. The short version: keep unopened bottles cool and out of the light, drink them within about two years, and once opened, refrigerate and finish within roughly two weeks.
How should I store unopened tuak?
Keep bottles upright in a cool, dark place — a cupboard or cellar is ideal, away from direct sunlight, the stove, or anywhere that gets warm. Heat and light are the enemies of any fermented drink; they accelerate ageing and flatten the delicate fruit and floral notes. Aim for a stable temperature below about 25°C.
How long does tuak last?
Unopened, small-batch tuak is best enjoyed within around 24 months. It won’t suddenly “go off” like milk, but its bright character softens over time. That’s why we print a vintage date on every bottle — so you always know how fresh it is.
How long does tuak last once opened?
Once you’ve opened a bottle, oxygen starts to dull the aromatics. Reseal it tightly, keep it in the fridge, and finish it within about two weeks for the best taste. Chilling also makes most styles more refreshing to drink anyway.
Does tuak need to be refrigerated?
Before opening, no — a cool cupboard is fine. After opening, yes: refrigeration slows oxidation and keeps the flavour fresh. If your tuak ever smells sharply vinegary or tastes sour and “off,” it has over-oxidised and is past its best.
